Welcome from the SCSU Vice President for Student Affairs!

Southern Connecticut State University

Dear SCSU Family Members,
Tracy Tyree, V.P. for Student Affairs, SCSU

Tracy Tyree, V.P. for Student Affairs

On behalf of the administration, faculty and staff, I enthusiastically welcome you to the 2017-2018 academic year at Southern Connecticut State University. I can’t wait for the campus to come alive again and it is such an exciting time at Southern!

We look forward to welcoming our new students for NOW (New Owl Weekend). The festivities begin with residence hall move-in on Friday, August 25. The full NOW program kicks off for all first-year students (residential and commuter) at 8:00 am on Saturday, August 26. It is a two-day required program (Saturday and Monday) filled with activities that help new students get off to a positive start.

Sunday provides a set of optional activities for all new students including a service project in the morning and outings in the afternoon. By the time classes begin, students will have made new friends, learned their way around campus, gained new knowledge, and hopefully feel an even greater excitement about their Southern experience.

Returning residential students move in to the residence halls on Monday, August 28, and all students start the first day of classes on Tuesday, August 29. We will again begin the year with WOW, our Week of Welcome.  This is a celebratory week of programs and events designed to kick off a new semester. Please encourage your students to take full advantage of this week of activities. Their involvement on campus will greatly enhance their leadership development, social adjustment, and academic success as well as their preparation for success upon graduation. New or returning, there is something for everyone!

Thank you for supporting your student’s choice of Southern Connecticut State University as the place for them to broaden their horizons, develop their talents, earn their degree, and set them on course to a successful future.

As parents and guardians of Southern students, your involvement with the University is critically important to the success of our students. I invite you to become actively involved in the SCSU community and offer your ideas, support and overall school spirit to help us in our mission to provide students with the most rewarding and satisfying years of their academic life. One important tradition that I’d like to highlight is Owl Family Day, which will be held on Saturday, October 21. It is an opportunity to visit campus, meet our university president, talk with faculty and staff, and join with other SCSU families to cheer on the SCSU football team (vs. Merrimack College at 3 p.m.) and the field hockey team (vs. Assumption College at 11 a.m.). Mark your calendars now!

Thank you for supporting your student’s choice of Southern Connecticut State University as the place for them to broaden their horizons, develop their talents, earn their degree, and set them on course to a successful future. You have put your trust in us to provide quality learning experiences in a safe, engaging environment. Our mission for social justice elevates our commitment to provide a welcoming forum to learn and grow from each other’s viewpoints, backgrounds, and experiences, as we prepare students to live and work in a world that becomes more rich and complex in its diversity every day. Working together, we can help our students navigate their way to personal development, professional competency, and overall success that will bring lifelong rewards!

More information on how you can become involved will follow in forthcoming issues of this free Parent Newsletter.  The newsletter is sent monthly via email to all parents/guardians of our students, informing you of campus happenings, important announcements and deadlines, financial aid and scholarship news, and a myriad of other interesting information we hope you will find relevant and engaging in ways that will inspire our partnership together to meet the needs of our students during their time with us at SCSU!

If you have any questions about the newsletter or if you have any thoughts and ideas you would like to share, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you!

Again, we are excited to have you as a part of the SCSU family! Go Owls!

Most sincerely,

Tracy M. Tyree, Ph.D.
