Students often say that the most surprising difference between high school and college is that just doing the bare minimum — going to class, listening to lectures, and taking notes — is just not enough to make the same caliber of grades they made in high school. They are also tackling a number of different courses — some they excel in with ease and others they lag in just trying to scrape by.
The LEC doesn’t want students to simply scrape by, hoping they have a passing grade at the end of the semester. We want students to actually understand course material, succeed in class, and carry what they learn through their tutoring sessions to their next semester of courses.
The LEC offers multiple services to UM students, such as individual tutoring, small group tutoring, drop-in tutoring for the most in-demand courses, facilitated group study, and assessment of academic needs. The peer tutors at the LEC are here to help students develop into independent and confident learners by helping them build their study habits and skills and by providing an encouraging environment for the student to learn. The director is also available for meetings to make sure that students are receiving the help they need and can also refer students to other campus resources that may be beneficial.
The sooner that students request tutoring, the better. Students usually know from the first week of classes or even by the name of the class on their schedule that they may need tutoring assistance. All that students need to do to take advantage of tutoring or any of the other services we provide is to stop by the LEC, which is located on the lower level of Carmichael Library. We can also be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 205-665-6113. For more information or to request tutoring, visit montevallo.edu/learning-enrichment-center.
