What does Ohio House Bill 523 mean for my student? Here are some common questions:

Is Medical Marijuana allowed on campus?

No. Marijuana, even if legally obtained under state law, is prohibited on campus. The University of Cincinnati must comply with and adhere to the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, which prohibits the use of illegal drugs on campus or at University-sponsored events and activities.

What if my student has a medical marijuana card?

Marijuana is prohibited on campus and at University-sponsored events and activities, even for individuals with medical marijuana cards.

What happens if my student has a medical marijuana card and they get caught with marijuana on campus?

Even if your student has a medical marijuana card, the substance is prohibited on campus and at University-sponsored events and activities. Individuals found using or possessing marijuana will be referred to the Office for Student Conduct and Community Standards and may be found in violation of the Student Code of Conduct.

Where should my student go if they need to use marijuana because of a medical condition?

Students are responsible for determining where to use the substance without violating the University’s drug-free policies and Student Code of Conduct. Marijuana is prohibited on campus and at University-sponsored events and activities, even for individuals with medical marijuana cards.

Can students store medical marijuana in their car while in class?

No. Marijuana, even if obtained by using a medical marijuana card, is prohibited on campus and at University-sponsored events and activities.

Can students use medical marijuana if they are a UC student but live off-campus?

Marijuana is prohibited on campus and at University-sponsored events and activities, even with a medical marijuana card. Students are responsible for determining the legal use of medical marijuana off-campus.

Can a clinician at University Health Services recommend medical marijuana to my student?

No. University Health Services’ clinicians will not be recommending medical marijuana.

If my student has a recommendation for medical marijuana from a UC physician, can they use it on campus?

No. Regardless of the prescribing physician, marijuana, even if obtained by using a medical marijuana card, is prohibited on campus and at University-sponsored events and activities.

Is the University notified when a student receives a medical marijuana card?

No. The University is not notified if a student receives a medical marijuana card.

Can distributors advertise for their dispensary on campus?

No. Advertising is prohibited under the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act.
