Studies show that the more involved students are in campus social activities, the more likely they are to be engaged in their own learning goals. The University of Montevallo’s, Office of Student Life can be a one-stop shop for helping your student find places to “plug-in.”
Because of the variety of student organizations, Student Life uses an online student group management program called Orgsync.com to keep students’ activity information current. Encourage your student to use his or her forUM username and password to set up an account with Orgsync.
Some of the activities that may interest your student are listed below:
While student government leaders are chosen in April for the next coming academic year, the application process begins in February. To run for an office, students can pick up an election packet outside the Student Life Office starting February 13th.
This group plans, organizes, and carries out social events for students. A total membership of 30 is sought each semester. There will be openings for members beginning the first week of the spring semester. Students can learn more through Orgsync or by contacting the Student Life Office.
There are five fraternities and eight sororities on campus. While most hold recruitment in the fall, there are some open bid opportunities in early spring. Students should ask in the Student Life Office if they are interested. More information can be found through Orgsync.
Intramural sports for spring semester are volleyball, softball, and kickball. Deadlines for sign-up can be found online under Student Life Intramurals.
There are over 90 clubs and organizations to choose from at the University of Montevallo. A complete list and description of all clubs can be found in Orgsync. Encourage your student to look at the list of clubs over the holidays so that they can start the spring semester with enthusiasm.
College Night, unique to the University of Montevallo, is a Homecoming tradition. Students choose to be a part of either the purple or gold side. The choice of side is left up to the student since both sides are open to anyone who wants to participate. College Night gives students opportunities to use all of their gifts, not just the ones they choose to study in class. If your son or daughter has a wide range of talents, then College Night is a way to enjoy these endeavors. Some of the opportunities for students are painting signs, being part of an original show, writing music, playing on a men’s or women’s sports team, serving as a business manager, being a cheerleader or trying out for a part in an original musical that is performed the week of Homecoming. Homecoming 2017 will take place on Saturday, February 11. A winner is chosen based on the scores earned through all of the various activities. For more information on both sides, students can log-in to Orgsync and search for either Gold Victory or Purple Side.
