Greetings from the Department of Residence Life

Southern Connecticut State University

Dear Parents and Guardians of our On-Campus Residence Hall Students,

Residence halls on campus are communities where our students can focus on their studies, hold leadership positions, and achieve personal success. We are excited to welcome new students as they move into their home away from home at SCSU!

New student move-in day is Friday, August 25.

Staff and student leaders will be on hand to assist you and your student throughout the day. Compass Chartwells, our food service provider, will offer a lunch special for parents and families in Connecticut Hall, our main dining facility, which will open promptly at 8 a.m. for your convenience. We also invite you to join us between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Residence Life Quad for free refreshing drinks and giveaways.

Additionally, the Residence Life Quad will be staffed with people ready and willing to answer any questions you may have about life at SCSU. Once your student has their room set up, they will join their residence hall staff for a meeting in their hall to meet their new neighbors and go over important rules about living and learning in our communities. After the students enjoy dinner on Friday, they will kick off a full week of activities with an outdoor event in the Residence Life quad.

New Owl Weekend begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 26 and will conclude at the end of the day on Monday, August 28.

These days are designed to help our new students transition to college life through interactive and educational programs, social activities and co-curricular experiences that will prepare them to begin classes on August 29. New students are required to participate in mandatory programs from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. on both Saturday, August 26 and Monday, August 28. Sunday, August 27 will feature optional activities and will include social excursions.

Returning students who are living on campus should plan to return on Monday, August 28 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

We are equally excited to be welcoming back our returning students and hope that they are ready for another great year!

SCSU Residence Life

In early August your student receives an email which invites them to sign up for a move-in time slot. As a reminder, all students must complete an online check-in prior to moving into their residence halls so that we can ensure everyone has an easy move-in experience. This information takes about 10 minutes to complete and must include at least two contact numbers for individuals whom university administrators may contact in the event of an emergency.

Health record paperwork

All students must have a complete health record on file with the Student Health and Wellness Center including verification of vaccinations and a physical within one year prior to the first day of classes. Please help us to ensure your student has completed these steps before move-in day to allow for a smooth transition to campus.

As you are preparing for your student’s arrival on campus in the next few weeks, please visit the SCSU Residence Life website at You will find profiles for each hall, lists of items that are suggested and those that are prohibited in the residence halls, mail and meal plan information, and much more.

From the moment our students move in, they will be invited to participate in experiences that can help them make friends, learn new skills, explore new topics, and set them on the right path for a successful career at SCSU. As we eagerly prepare for their arrival, we encourage you to contact us with any questions at [email protected].

Welcome home to Southern!
