It’s exciting to explore a new city with your college student and discover favorite new places to dine together. But what if your student has a dietary restriction? Students with gluten allergies are in luck in Lubbock. They can safely enjoy the “Hub City’s” best pizza, BBQ and fine dining. Here are five Lubbock restaurants with gluten-free choices that you shouldn’t miss.
2610 Salem Ave.
Owned and operated by an executive chef and a native of Lubbock, Cocina de la Sirena serves up coastal cuisine with Latin American flare. From traditional favorites like tacos and enchiladas to sea bass and scallops, almost everything on their menu is gluten-free and clearly labeled. The restaurant is located in Cactus Alley, a quaint courtyard home to several of Lubbock’s favorite shops. There’s local artwork on the walls and live music on the weekend. One diner shared, “It is difficult for a gluten-free eater to find well-marked menus, and well-educated staff. Cocina de la Sirena has taken care of both!”
217 US-62, Wolfforth
Texas Monthly rated Evie Mae’s a Texas BBQ favorite — and as an added bonus, their entiremenu (apart from the sandwich buns and sliced bread) is gluten-free. The co-owner and pit master was diagnosed with celiac disease so he understands how to cook for someone with gluten allergies. Dig into their famous prime rib dinner twice a month or feast on traditional BBQ fare with all the sides (green chile cheese grits pay homage to the owners’ New Mexico roots). Not surprisingly, at Evie Mae’s even the desserts are gluten-free, so save room for a slice of their delicious chocolate cake.
8008 Abbeville Ave.
Healthy Essentials’ entire menu is gluten-free, and all items are under 500 calories. It is a complete nutrition store that offers smoothies, sandwiches, soups, salads, wraps and organic coffees and teas. As an alternative to fast food with gluten-free options and lighter fare, this local eatery fits the bill. Do stop by to check out the daily paleo specials and indulge in “Comfort Food Without Guilt.” They’re open from 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 4 p.m. on Saturday.
2705 26th St. & 8211 Slide Rd.
This local pizza place dishes up some of the best pies in Lubbock, and the gluten-free cheese pizza listed on the menu can be customized with any number of toppings. A local reviewer raved, “Best pizza and staff! …The most amazing cauliflower-crusted pizza ever! A must-have for people who are gluten-free and dieting.” You’ll also love the homey, neighborhood atmosphere and craft beer selection.
1204 Broadway Ave. #103.
At Lubbock’s premier choice for upscale dining, all the ingredients are locally sourced, seasonal and fresh. With an ever-changing and always tasty menu, the co-owners and executive chefs strive to accommodate any dietary requirement. The West Table is located in the historic Pioneer Building downtown and participates in Lubbock’s First Friday Art Trail. For a diner with gluten allergies, this contemporary New American gem offers a fine dining experience
like no other.
