Flu update from the SCSU Health and Wellness Center

By Southern Connecticut State University

The number of flu cases across the state and nation are currently high, with elevated numbers of hospitalizations and even deaths. The peak of flu season is in full force and will continue for at least several more weeks.

What precautions can students take to minimize their risks for infection?

  1. It’s important for students and everyone to remember to take the usual precautions including frequent hand-washing and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
  2. Although it is reported that the current flu vaccine is not working as well as was anticipated, it is still important to receive the vaccine because it can provide protection against some strains of the flu, minimize the effect of the symptoms, and reduce hospitalizations and deaths.
  3. There are antiviral medications that can treat the flu symptoms and should be given to people who are ill or have a high risk of serious complications. The earlier the antiviral medications are given after the onset of the illness, the better the response.

SCSU Health Services is available to help students by diagnosing and treating the flu as well as other common illnesses.  Our hours of operation are Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday 9:30 a.m.–4:30 pm. Appointments are encouraged and can be made by students calling us at (203) 392-6300.

Free nutrition consultations!

The Wellness Center at SCSU is committed to promoting health and wellness.
