Academic support available to students

The fall semester is over and students have received their semester grades. As parents and guardians, how can we help our students academically, and what resources are available if they did not do well in the fall, or did fairly well but would like to do better?

At Southern, there are many academic support resources available on campus. One in particular is the Academic Success Center. The Academic Success Center provides free tutoring support in a variety of different subjects to include writing, math, chemistry, biology, physics, nursing, communication disorders, computer science, and many more.

The Academic Success Center also provides targeted course support through the supplemental instruction and peer academic leaders programs. This currently includes several math, computer science, chemistry, accounting, and economics courses. Students can also receive one-on-one support from a peer or professional Academic Success Coach to work with them on their individual academic needs any time throughout the semester.

The Academic Success Center is located in Hilton C. Buley Library, room 303. The Center hours are Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and a pilot program for online support on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.

Please ask your student to visit the website to find more information about the Center and to sign up for an appointment with any of the services we provide: southernct.edu/student-life/academic-success/academic-success-center.

Encourage your student to stop by the Academic Success Center office this spring or call us at (203) 392-5186. We are here to help!
