New Sooner Parents President

New Sooner Parents President

OU

For the past three years, Mike Kauffman has served as our Sooner Parents President. He has been a fantastic leader and we have valued his investment in Sooner Parents. During our Spring Sooner Parent meeting, we had the opportunity to vote on our new Sooner Parents President. We would like to introduce our new President, Mariann Lawson. Check out this letter she wrote recently for our new publication.

Welcome Sooner Parents!

Every parent knows the great pride and joy they have as they send their children off to college. Years of investing in their hopes and dreams, late nights of homework and extracurricular activities, watching them grow and become young adults all come to pass in what feels like a moment’s time. Knowing that your son or daughter will be away from home can leave you feeling a little anxious and seem a little daunting…until you realize they will be at the University of Oklahoma.

For the last 24 years, the University has flourished under the progressive and visionary leadership of President David L. Boren. With the addition of more than 30 new programs, OU has grown and progressed like no other time in the University’s history. Beginning in the summer of 2018, the next exciting chapter of the school will commence. The University community, including Sooner Parents, is excited to welcome OU’s fourteenth president, James Gallogly.

Steeped in great academic tradition, OU also offers a strong sense of community as the OU Family. Your student will find opportunities to build great relationships with other students, faculty and staff while taking advantage of the unique resources that can be found all over campus to help them reach their goals and aspirations.

My husband John and I have had the honor to send both of our sons to OU, our alma mater. As fourth generation Sooners, they have both successfully finished their undergraduate degrees. Our son Chase is in his first year of returning to OU to achieve his Masters in Social Work, and our son Cody will be graduating in May 2018 with his Masters in Civil Engineering through the accelerated master’s program. Each of them has had fulfilling and enriching campus experiences, both academically and personally. Their Sooner experiences have built the foundation on which they will create their future success.

As I mentioned early on, time passes quickly. We gain perspective and appreciation for all that has come to pass and all that we can expectantly look forward to. I know that your family’s experience at the University of Oklahoma will be as positive and fulfilling as my family’s has been. I again wholeheartedly encourage you to join Sooner Parents and to please contact me if I can be of any help to you, your student or your family.

Boomer Sooner!

  • I've been through the process twice, and you are so right: it is stressful! However, everything works out for the best. My daughter ended up attending a school she didn't even want to see. In fact, the day we went to visit, she decided to leave the tour early, rather than going to the question and answer session. Well, it was the best four years of her life thus far, and she has made lifetime friends and had many wonderful experiences because of her education there. Thanks for sharing. I always love reading your pieces.
