2017 SCSU Owl Family Day and Homecoming

SCSU invites you to join other Southern Connecticut State University parents and families for a special time on campus during one of New Haven’s most beautiful seasons. Once again, Owl Family Day will happen during Homecoming which adds to the excitement and fun.

The 2017 Owl Family Day provides an opportunity for you to visit your student’s campus home, meet other SCSU alumni and families, talk with university faculty and staff, explore the campus, and cheer on the SCSU Football Owls to a victory over the Merrimack Warriors, and the SCSU Owls women’s hockey team over Assumption College! In addition, there will be a parade, tailgate party, vendors, a 5k Race, a chance to win $11,000 and much more!

Tentative schedule of events:

Friday, October 20

5 p.m. — Sibling Night at Residence Halls
Siblings of our resident students who are ages 5-15 are welcome to sleep over in their big brother/big sister’s residence hall room. For safety reasons, each resident student is limited to hosting three siblings/family members in their rooms. Visiting siblings will be given Sibling Night badges which will allow them access to the residence hall of their host, and allow them to participate in Friday’s activities and dinner. 7:30 pm — New Haven Symphony Orchestra: Guys and Dolls in Concert
The New Haven Symphony Orchestra performs a concert version of the Broadway smash hit, celebrating the American tradition of musical theatre with Frank Loesser’s comedy about rolling the dice and falling in love under the bright lights of Broadway. Featuring William Boughton, conductor, lead singers from the Broadway show, and our own SCSU Choir as the ensemble.

Saturday, October 21

9  a.m. — Registration Opens, Registration Tent/Farnham Programming Space

9 a.m. — Conn Hall opens for brunch, $8.00 per person

10 a.m. — Bob Corda 5K Road Race and Kids 1K Fun, Adanti Student Center (start)
Bob Corda was a member of the SCSU community for over 30 years, working first in Audio/Visual Television and then as the Director of the Language Laboratory. Bob was an avid runner and a faithful participant of the annual SCSU Homecoming road race. After Bob passed, the annual race was named after him, and the Bob Corda Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 by his friend, Brad Crerar. The USATF-certified race course will be throughout the SCSU campus.

10 a.m. — Owl Family Day Road to 11k
A chance to win tuition ($11,000/11K) for a year!                                                                             Participants will need to take selfies with six university landmarks to be entered into a chance to kick a football into the bed of a truck. If the football stays in the bed of the truck, the participant wins the $11,000 prize. Get full details of how to participate at the Owl Family Day Registration Tent 9–11 a.m., and at the Tailgate in Lot 9 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

10 a.m. — Sustainable Southern, Academic Science and Laboratory Building
Stop by and learn from our faculty and staff about SCSU’s sustainability measures!

10 a.m. — West Rock Shuttle Tour, Meet at Hickerson Hall
Enjoy a beautiful walk in West Rock State Park with our experienced tour guides! Trip is approximately 90 minutes.

11 a.m. — SCSU Women’s Field Hockey vs. Assumption College, Jess Dow Field

11 a.m. — Homecoming Tailgate and Pre-Game Party, Parking Lot 9

1 p.m. —  Homecoming Parade 2017
Theme is TV; viewing at Moore Field House, parading through Lot 9!

3 p.m. — Homecoming Football Game vs. Merrimack Warriors, Jess Dow Field  

8 p.m. — Michael Carbonaro from the hit TV show The Carbonaro Effect at Lyman Center  
This is an amazing family-friendly show starring the magician you’ve seen on the 3rd season of his hit show The Carbonaro Effect on TRUTV. Michael Carbonaro is an actor, magician, comedian and improv artist known for his unique acts of magic and outlandish stunts on late night television, including The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Michael has also appeared on shows such as 30 Rock, Wizards of Waverly Place, CSI Miami, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. He is an OutFest Best Actor Award winner as well as a two-time nominee for an Academy of Magical Arts Magician of the Year Award.

There is a nominal cost for the Owl Family Weekend: $12.00 per person, free for children age 12 and under. No charge for your SCSU student!
